Abraham
Speak to us Father

Long ago there was a man
Blessed and called Indeed
Abram, though he was just a man
The Lord God would plant his seed
When called to leave his father's house,
For a land the Lord would show.
"A nation, you will blessed be,
My people eternally."

Time had passed, many trials done,
His wife Sarai and he
Needed an heir, but Sarai's womb was bare,
A nation would they ever be?
At ninety-nine Abram's eyes did see.
The Lord appeared to them
He spoke, "I am God, walk before me.
And you shall be called Abraham."
A name for a father of many nations,
The stars won't number these,
Your wife Sarai, Sarah will be
A mother at ninety.

Sarah scoffed at such a tale.
"A child, you and I, how so?
You are old and I am frail
But if the Lord sees it, He knows."
A year did pass and a son was born
"Isaac shall be his name.
He makes me laugh with such a joy.
Can it be, our own little boy?"

Eight years or so of youth behind,
When the Lord returned to claim,
"Take your son, your only son
Burn him for me I say."
"Burn him?
But
All right, I'll do as you say.
Saddle the donkey, chop the wood
The Lord will provide a way."

Three days they traveled on,
Abraham wished it were four.
Then up ahead he saw the place
And bowed his head once more

"Keep the donkey stay here until,
The boy and I return.
You can carry the wood my child"
Isaac, was elated to learn.
"Father, I do not understand,
Your knife and the wood I bear.
What of the Lamb? We need a lamb."
"Isaac, the lamb will be there."
The boy only struggled for a moment and then
Must have prayed for his father's mind.
"Father, please - I'll be a good boy!"
And Abraham's knife was held high!
"Stop! Do now harm one hair on his head!"
A voice broke forth from the sky.
Abraham collapsed, the knife dropped on the ground.
Then he wept, "I knew he'd provide."
